Please join us Saturday April 16, 2011 for a Symposium on the Heritage of Water

April 7, 2011

Nomination Grand Pré is celebrating the heritage of water and International Day for Monuments and Sites on Saturday, by organizing a symposium on the Heritage of Water at the KC Irving Environmental Science Centre, Acadia University on April 16 and a community event in Grand Pré Sunday, April 17.

International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated around the world on April 18th. Organized by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and recognized by UNESCO, it is an opportunity to acknowledge the diversity of cultural heritage that is shared by humankind. The day raises public awareness around the efforts that are required to protect and conserve world heritage. Each year, International Day for Monuments and Sites celebrates a different aspect of our collective heritage. The 2011 theme is the heritage of water.

The symposium on Saturday, April 16 is hosted by Acadia University and is revolves around three themes: water as landscapes, water as a way of life, and water as transportation. Speakers include Peter Labor (Heritage River Program),  Dr. Graham Daborn (Acadia University), Jenna Boone  (Joggins Fossil Institute), Laurence Mawhinney, (Old Town Lunenburg World Heritage Site), Roy Bishop, (Acadia University (ret’d)), David Scott (Dalhousie University), Albert Marshall (Mi’kmaq community of Eskasoni), John Shaw (Bedford Institute of Oceanography) and Pam Buell (Parks Canada, Rideau Canal World Heritage Site).

There will be a UNESCO table set up with giveaways; an Art display; volunteers dressed in period costumes; and a showing of the Deportation movie.

Successful Meeting – October 2009

October 23, 2009

A successful public meeting was held in the evening on October 22 in Grand Pré to address questions that had been raised at the previous public meeting in May 2009.  The group was also enlightened by an outline of the direction of the Management Plan draft as presented by the project manager for the proposed World Heritage Site.

A turn out of approximately 40 some community members came to hear their questions answered on how a UNESCO designation would impact their way of life in Grand Pré.  There were no further questions identified from this meeting and community members were reassured of the work that is expected over the next coming  months. The next meeting will occur in the Spring 2010.

Community members involved with the project spoke with great pride and demonstrated a vision with a strong sense of unity among  the community of Grand Pré and all stakeholders of the project.
